Following on from a successful trial period in 2015, the UCI has announced that from January 1st 2016 professional cycling teams will be permitted to use road bikes fitted with disc brakes.
Initially it was suggested that only World Tour teams would be permitted to use disc brakes, but it has announced that World Tour teams, Pro Continental, Continental and UCI Women’s teams will all be permitted to use disc brakes in competition.
It is important to note that 2016 is effectively an extended testing period, albeit with no restrictions over the usage or permissible races. This is with a view to full adoption for 2017 as initially stated. It is understood that the UCI will standardise 160mm rotors, although this is currently unconfirmed.
This announcement does put some pressure on Campagnolo, as they are the only groupset manufacturer without a disc brake offering.
